I take both as supplements to a diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and very little meat. Try to eat some salmon sometimes, too. It's filled with beneficial omega threes.A good, healthy diet is the best way to prevent heart disease. You can splurge sometimes and have a desert if you do eat healthfully.
References :
You need to discuss this with your own physician. As a cardiologist, I commonly calculate my patient's ten year risk of a heart attack and talk with the patient about modifying that risk. Your own doctor can do this as well. You might be better off simply replacing some of the red meat in your diet with cold water fish.
References :
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE THAT IT HELP. AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION DO NOT ADVISE THE USE OF SUCH SUPPLEMENTS EVEN IN PATIENTS WITH HEART ATTACKS
References :
It certainly is. Flaxseed contains short chain Omega 3 fatty acids whereas fish oils contain the long chain variety. The long chain Omega 3's can be converted by the body to the short chain when required. Your best bet is to take a spoonful of cod liver oil every day. If you find it to be unpalatable, then take the halibut liver oil capsules. With the capsules you're taking less in terms of volume, but the strength should be about the same because you're getting more bang for the buck with the caps.
To explain further, the halibut is usually a larger and older fish than the cod, and its liver oil is therefore much stronger.
And, let's not forget the natural vitamin D3 which is found in this oil. To prevent the onset of some chronic diseases, it is most important that we persevere to ensure that we maintain an adequate daily intake of this vitamin. This is especially so if we're not residing in the sunbelt and not taking advantage of the sun's rays.
References :
Check with your Doctor on this. It's all a matter of balance. Eskimos have extremely low rates of heart disease but extremely high rates of hemmorahgic stroke. Their fish oil consumption is high. One concern with fish oil is the source of it. If it comes from fish which are in contaminated waters, the mercury levels can be high. Flaxseed on the other hand should not have contamination problems particularly if it is organic. Certainly Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to your diet . This is the main reason people focus on flax seed and fish oil. I use flax seed oil because you don't get the characteristic fish oil burp and aftertaste. Check with your Doctor and/or Pharmacist.
References :
Research does show a beneficial effect of fish oils (omega three fatty acids) though I do not know if there has also been shown an effect of taking supplements. What I mean is that often in medicine, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I wouldn't worry so much as taking supplements as making sure to include oils and fish in your diet. I do know that there are concerns that too many PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) can actually become oxidized and lead to potentially too many free radicals in the blood system. Free radicals are very reactive substances and are implicated in everything from heart disease to cancer.
References :
Very beneficial. Not only helps with heart disease but with depression. Unless you can afford the really expensive fish oil, I would use flaxseed oil instead. I've used both. Both work great.
References :
Absolutely, it's good to get omega-3 from fish oil/flax seed. I personally prefer flaxseed supplements because you don't get the fishy aftertaste.
