Many industrialised nations are facing an epidemic. The adoption of a life that is filled with “Westernized” convenience and jobs that do not require the person to be active is leading to an increased number of cases of people suffering with diabetes, heart disease and raised blood pressure.

Unfortunately, although the repercussions of high blood pressure are grave, many of those who suffer with the conditions are not aware as there is usually no outward sign. This is why it is often referred to as the silent killer.

For centuries Chinese and Indian healers have been using herbs like garlic, basil, dill weed, ginger, marjoram and oregano to help lower blood pressure, and there is growing evidence that they can help a person regulate their blood pressure, but are unlikely to relieve the condition completely.

Some of the herbs are natural blood thinners like garlic. In trials carried out it was shown that those patients taking either fresh (raw) garlic or pure garlic oil showed a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

Garlic also helps reduce the levels of cholesterol and other kinds of plaque building up in the blood vessels, and dilate the arteries so the heart can more easily push blood through them.

Another herb, which seems to contain many of the beneficial qualities of garlic, is hawthorn. This small shrub which is a member of the Rose family, was traditionally used to ward of evil spirits in medieval times by hanging a branch over the entranceway into the house.

A study that was conducted on people who suffered with type 2 diabetes found that after 16 weeks of taking the hawthorn extract that their blood pressure had dropped. It also showed that there where no adverse reactions with other drugs the participants where taking.

It is important to discuss any herbal or alternative supplements that you are considering taking with your doctor. Many natural alternatives or complementary preparations will not interact with conventional blood pressure medication, but some of them do so its best to be prepared.
