Scarlet Letter. How does Hawthorne describe the Puritan community. Do you agree with this response?

Hawthorne descibes the Purtian community as specifically having both a
cemetary and a prison, both of which were seen as "their earliest
necessities." (41) The diction which Hawthorne uses to describe the
prison gives the reader a somewhat dark and gloomy image, perhaps the
ideal image that readers picture when they think of "prison." Hawthorne
writes, "the wooden jail was already marked with weather stains and
other indications of age, which gave a yet darker aspect to its
beetle-browed and gloomy front." (41) He continues the use of gloomy
diction when he describes the actual members of the community when he
writes, "A throng of bearded men, in sad colored garments and gray,
steeple-crowned hats, intermixed with women, some wearing goods, and
others bareheaded." (41)
Upon describing the prisoner Hawthorne uses the scene of the rose-bush
growning beside the door to encourage the readers to sympathize with the
prisoner. The reason i say sympathize is due to the section which he
writes, "with its delicate gems…in token that the deep heart of Nature
could pity and be kind to him." (41) The rose-bush being perhaps the
only image of beauty up to this point stands out, almost as a symbol of
kindness being offered to the prisoners coming in and out of the prison
gates.
