What is FORD talking about…"excitement of an SUV"?
Posted by admin on Oct 20, 2009
Have you seen the new Ford commercial, with the guy supposed to be all depressed looking at his normal car, and then comes the line about the "excitement of an SUV", along with the bogus claim that it gets the same mpg as a car.
Our 4-Banger Honda CRV at best, only gets 21-22PMG, and has provided about as much excitement as a heart attack, as well as every SUV/Truck I have ever driven, or been a passenger of. That "sport" in front of the UV may apply to something like a $100K Porsche Cayenne, but not an Escape from Ford.
well your crv is a foregn pile of junk… I have a 4 cylinder escape and i get about 26-27 mpg…

They try to make SUVs sound fun so you will buy one.

I’ve been wondering about that one myself. As far as I’m concerned, an SUV has all the excitement of an unsliced loaf of day-old bread.

off-road-ability and summer sports activities- that is indeed the focus of their claim. To mean that if you own an SUV you can do all sorts of things on the weekend.
And they can claim this if you understand that the Ford Escape Hybrid (not pictured in Commercial) does indeed get superior mileage compared to most SUV’s, similar to a mid-size cars mileage.
But the what is most troubling, and I HATE FORD COMMERCIALS, is the fact that the people that write the ads know virtually nothing about the cars or truck they are representing and promoting.
Why else would they show a Ford Truck towing what looks like a big load (although it is not)? I’m referring to the commercial showing it hauling a bunch (3) hollow piping, that weigh about 500 lbs a piece, for a total of 1500 pounds… when its potential is about 14,000 lbs. Its just plain stupid!!
and an insult to anyone with any intelligence.
Chevy and Dodge have the same overcooked under-"beefed" commercials too.

Yea SUVs are pretty cool cars to drive. I don’t classify a CRV as an SUV and the Ford Escape is not a real SUV either. And you don’t need to spend 100K on a Cayenne to get the Sport in SUV.
Lets for this example just use my daily car. A 2004 Volkswagen Touareg V8. First with the sport part. My Touareg goes 0-60mph in about 7.2s which is faster than many cars like an Audi 2.0T or Acura TSX. Second the Touareg can reach speeds up to 140mph with no problem. The 4.2l 310hp engine I have is amazing and really moves my 5,500lb truck well. The Touareg handles great at those high speeds also much better than the other cars I have driven over 100mph which are a Mercedes CLK Convertible and G35 Sedan. Also the Touareg V8 starts at $44,000. Second the Jeep SRT8 which goes 0-60mph in 4.9s! Faster than most sports cars starts at $40,000.
Now with my Touareg I can go cruise at 130mph or I can do some of the hardest off roading there is, the Touareg is a very capable Off roading suv inclines up to 45degrees 2 feet of water etc.. Also I can tow 7,700lbs. I am a little bit higher than the rest of the cars on the road so I can see what’s going on in front of me better and it is a nice feeling knowing that if I did get into a crash I have 5,500lbs of metal around me instead of the average 3,800lbs of a car. So lets rap it up, 140mph 0-60 in 7.2s amazing off road, tow 7,700lbs fits a lot of things in the truck, safe. Not exciting enough for you?
There are other SUV like the Touareg.
Range Rover Sport, Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 Mercedes ML and G500. Also some fast and nice pickups such as Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Titan. Sure I get 13mpg in my Touareg but I can do a lot more than anyone in a Audi A4 or G35 could do.
