Drugs

Posted by admin on Nov 3, 2009

Drug herb interaction is a problem – even though herbs can cure many health issues. A product of mother Earth, using herbs can still cause a problem particularly when you are taking prescription medicines simultaneously. The two together can cause side effects and have implications on the body such as digestion problems and others as well.

And that is precisely why herbal supplements and products come with the advice that ‘you should consult your doctor before use’. So be frank with your doctor. Tell him that you have been taking these herbs and pills so that he knows in advance before prescribing. The Doctor can also inform you about any complications that may arise. Even if you are not on any herbal supplements at the moment but are planning to take it in the future, you should still tell your doctor.

On an herbal supplement? Do you notice any change to your body? Closely monitor for the slightest symptoms, as they may be early warnings of a drug herb interaction.

There Are Health Issues In Drug Herb Interaction

Those who specialize in alternative medicines and conventional medical practitioners, both worry about the drug herb interaction problem. This is because negative cases concerning interactions have come occurred. However, you need to understand that drug-herb interactions do not occur because of a chemical reaction between the drug and herb components, which produces a toxic material. Instead, these interactions can be a result of herb components causing a decrease or increase in the quantities of drug in one’s bloodstream.

It has been observed that herbs tend to lower the amount of drug in the body by stopping it from mixing with the blood. In such a case, the drug you are taking end up having no effect at all.

In other cases, herbs in the blood also enhance the drug levels thereby immediately breaking down and removing the drug from the body. When this happens, the dosage of drugs could reach high levels producing unwanted side affects.

There are actually many drug herb interaction health concerns. Such as blood pressure increase resulting in heart problems, infections, sugar levels in the blood going down, blood clots and others like this.

Yes herbs can cure but there are still many safety issues. They may not be as safe as you think. Herbal supplements and prescription drugs can change their ability to have a positive impact. So it is always better that you take the opinion of a doctor about the negative effects of drug herb interaction and also take precautions of possible side effects. Only then can you get the best results.

What is a good supplement (pill or drink mix) to take prior to working out for boosted energy?

Posted by admin on Nov 2, 2009

I’m looking for something that won’t get my heart beating super fast and also something without ephedra or similar herbs to that effect. I’ve taken hydroxy cut but it gets me too jittery. It was almost the feeling of my mind feeling like it’s racing. I’m looking for something more natural. I actually prefer a drink that I can mix in the blender, but if you know of a good pill that safe on the heart that will work as well. Thanks!!!

I know of a energy drink that you would probably like very much. It is available in a pouch and you mix it with water or other beverage. You can also get it in 12 oz. cans. I like it very much, it is healthy for you, and it gives me energy that lasts all day. It has all natural ingredients. No jittering or crashing.

Most energy drinks, have high amounts of sugar. Obviously, you are concerned about your health.

The only drink I found that is low in calories, sugar, and NO caffeine is great for sports activities and exercising. I found it at www.carlshealthhelp.com/energy

About Appetite Suppressors to Help Reduce Weight

Posted by admin on Nov 1, 2009

Appetite suppressors can be a help during a slimming process. On the market of today you can find both appetite suppressors related to the substance amphetamine and appetite reducers of herbal origin. Appetite suppressors are generally recommended to use together with a diet program and exercise, and only for a limited time period. They are never recommended to use as the only means of achieving a reduced weight.

Substances to reduce appetite have been used since the First World War. Soldiers used the stimulating substance amphetamine both to stimulate their fighting capacity and to reduce hunger. The same was done in the Second World War. After the last war, the civil market began to use amphetamine and related substances to help reduce the intake of food during weight loss efforts.

A. APPETITE SUPPRESSORS OF THE AMPHETAMINE GROUP

Amphetamine and related substances stimulate the alertness of the central nervous system and the impulse to external action. When zones of the brain dealing with external action are in high activity, signals are sent to zones controlling appetite, digestion and connected functions to reduce their activity. Thus central stimulating substances also reduce appetite. Since these drugs increase the bodily activity, they also help to reduce weight by inducing a higher rate of fat burning.

Some drugs of this group are also used as antidepressant, for example fluoxetine hudrochloride (Prozac).

Being central stimulants all these appetite suppressors also bear a certain risk of developing addiction, and of side effects like insomnia, agitation, manic reactions, hypertension, stroke, heart valve damage and heart rhythm disturbances.

Because of such dangerous effects, many of these substances have been banned from most markets as appetite suppressants, for example amphetamine itself, aminorex, fenfluramine, phenylpropanolamine and ephedrine. However, many of these substances are still used for other purposes, for example to stimulate heart activity and to regulate up a too low blood pressure.

Substances of this group available on the market today as appetite suppresants are: Phentermine, diethylpropion, phenidmetrazine, benzphetamine, sibutramine, rimonabant, oxyntomodulin and fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac).

PHENTERMINE

Phentermine is perhaps the most widely used appetite suppressant drug today. It works by increasing the release of the hormones / neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonine and dopamine, The signals from these substances make the nervous system more alert for external action and reduce appetite.

EPHEDRA AND EPHEDRINE

Ephedrine is a central stimulant extracted from species of the plant genus Ephedra. The substance is banned in most communities as a appetite suppressor nowadays, but are used for other medical purposes, for example to stimulate heart activity and increase blood pressure. In some communities Ephedra as a herb is still used as a part of stimulating herbal preparations.

SIBUTRAMINE

Sibutramine works by reducing the reuptake of the hormones / neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinefrine and dopamine and thus increases the effects from these substances, with increased alertness and reduced appetite as a result.

RIMONABANT

This is a new drug working by blocking signals receptors that increase appetite upon signals from neurotransmitters / hormones. These are the same receptors that react upon contact with substances in the narcotic herb Cannabis. The main action of this drug is appetite reduction. In addition to appetite reduction it also seems to help smoking cessation for certain smokers. Severe depression may be a side effect of this drug.

B. MODERN HERBAL APPETITE SUPPRESSORS

Because of the potential side effects of appetite suppressors from the amphetamine group, people often turn to herbal appetite reducers with a very long history of use in their country of origin without having shown the same side effects. The herbal appetite suppressors Hoodia Gordonii and pinnothine are two such herbal appetite suppressors of increasing popularity. Preparations containing these herbs generally also contain herbs that increase the burning of fat, or herbs that reduce the uptake of fat or sugar from the intestines.

HOODIA GORDONII

This is a cactus-like plant native in the African dessert Kalahari. The San tribe living in this region has used the herb in centuries to suppress hungers during long hunting expeditions. In the long traditional use, the herb has shown to suppress hunger without side effects.

The plant contains substances whose molecules resemble glucose molecules. When there is enough glucose in the blood, the brain interprets it as a signal to reduce the hunger. The substances of the Hoodia Gordonii give the same signal to the brain, and thus reduce the appetite.

PINNOTHIN

This chemical complex is found on the Korean Pine Nut tree Pinus Koreanensis, and the working substance of Pinnothin is pinnoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid with 18 carbon atoms, three double bounds and with the first bound on the fifth carbon atom (omega-5 poly-unsaturated fatty acid). Pinnoleic acid reduces the appetite by inducing production of a larger amount of the appetite regulating signal substance cholecystokinin (CCK), which then is released into the blood circulation. CCK in the blood is interpreted by the brain as a command to reduce the feeling of hunger. Another ways CCK works, is by delaying the emptying of the stomach content into the intestines, and by giving signal to the gall bladder to empty its content with digestive enzymes into the small intestine. The stomach will therefore lack room for new food a longer time each day, and this reduces the urge to eat.

Green Tea And Garlic: What Are The Health Benefits?

Posted by admin on Oct 30, 2009

Can you guess the most popular beverage in the U.S. market this last decade? Green Tea made from unfermented tea leaves is the answer. Research suggests the fermentation process is what makes it contain the highest concentration of polyphenols, antioxidants that rids the body of free radicals. Some preliminary studies also show that green tea’s polyphenols, particularly ECGC, can help stop the free-radical damage that may lead to cancer and heart disease.

Garlic has also been popular in that many people believe it is a heart disease preventative. I don’t believe anyone is adding garlic to their green tea, but research does show, many people add garlic to all kinds of foods in the belief that it is good for their heart and a preventative for other diseases.

Green tea is popular as a healing brew; however, most studies on its effects have been done the in animals. Human studies of the effects of green tea have been population-based (studies that follow large groups of people over a specified period of time). The results of these studies have been inconsistent.

The Food and Drug Administration says there is no scientific evidence that drinking green tea reduces heart disease. A spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Dave Grotto, says “Green tea has a lot of wonderful active compounds that may play a role in fighting cancer and heart disease and even protecting the lining of the arteries. “But there needs to be a lot more research.”

Dr. Frank Greenway, head of the outpatient clinic at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., studies herbal supplements and obesity. He says, “There’s nothing magic about green tea.” “I’ll be surprised if it is shown to have any profound effect on weight loss.” There have been many claims that green tea does help with weight loss. Some studies suggest that green tea’s polyphenols may boost metabolism and help burn fat.

Dr. Greenway also says, “Green tea won’t hurt you.” “Herbs always play catch-up when it comes to research.”

Some studies show that some green tea drinkers may actually get more health benefits than others. Green tea provides more antioxidants freshly brewed.

Garlic is another popular additive to boost good heart health. Some people have been adding it to chicken wings, pasta and many other things. Researchers are saying garlic is not as powerful a cardiac protector as once thought.

A series of studies over the last several years show that garlic may not be so great at lowering cholesterol levels. Christopher Gardner, a Stanford professor of medicine led the study and he says, “I was somewhat surprised that even the raw garlic didn’t have any effect. But the evidence is very clear. Garlic just doesn’t work in lowering cholesterol levels.”

The good news is that research does not rule out garlic’s potential benefits in reducing levels of cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure or atherosclerosis.

Green tea and garlic probably do have some extra benefits, but to date scientific evidence does not prove either of them to help our health substantially.

Tips for Herbal Colon Cleansing

Posted by admin on Oct 27, 2009

Although herbs have been used for medicinal purposes for years in countries like China and India, their medical significance was not recognized in most of the West. It is only recently that people have started showing interest in these and a lot of research work is being carried out to understand the full potential of these herbs.

If we look at China we will see that the Chinese people not only use herbs as medicines but they also use them extensively in their food. Some claim that such use of herb in diet is the reason behind prolonged lives of the Chinese people. And not only do they live long, they are extremely healthy even at a very old age. Studies have also revealed that Chinese people have a very low rate of heart diseases.

There has been a general rise in the interest levels among many Americans about colon health. Even if it is still considered not a very pleasant topic to talk about but at least now they have the internet where they can learn and understand what the threats are. And what they are seeing is that herbs can play a significant role in ensuring that you have a healthy colon.

The colon cleanse herbs and the herbal laxatives are generally harmless and are alternatives to commercial laxatives. Colon cleanse herbs contain substances which fall under the category of anthraquinones. These would include cascara sagrada, rhubarb, and senna. That the herbs have laxative effects can be attributed to the presence of the anthraquinone substances.

In fact the herbs are quite strong and potent in their action with most herbs starting to show results within half a day of consumption. It would be wise to keep the next two days of your week free as you wouldn’t be able to go outside your home due to the several visits to the toilet that might be necessary. Since the herbs are so powerful you need to take them only in moderate amounts.

It must be understood that some of these herbs have severe side effects and if are used over a long period of time can cause organ damage including your liver, kidneys and the colon.

A sustained use of them can also develop a dependency where you will stop having regular bowel movement without the use of these herbs.

These herbs should also not be taken by pregnant women, nursing others and children.

Alcoholism – Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies, Symptom of Alcoholism and Other Treatments

Posted by admin on Oct 25, 2009

What is Alcoholism?

Alcoholism is defined as an irresistible urge to consume alcohol. People suffering from alcoholism are very well aware of the dangerous effects alcohol could have on their bodies, but still they are unable to resist the urge to consume it. They will usually drink beyond acceptable limits and will be in an inebriated state most often, causing embarrassment and inconvenience to the people with them.

Most people who consume alcohol have more than they can manage. This is seen in alcohol drinkers who lose control of their senses when they have one drink too many. Such an overstepping of limits is called as alcohol abuse. People who abuse alcohol are having more alcohol than their body allows them, but they have not yet come totally under the control of their alcohol habit. However, if they continue drinking for long, then they will not be able to resist alcohol and will become totally addicted to it. This situation is called as alcoholism.

Both alcohol abuse and alcoholism are social vices apart from being detrimental to the person’s health. They can be eliminated only by exercising control and being determined.

Why is Alcoholism dangerous?

Ethyl alcohol – the alcohol which is used in all alcohol products – is a liquid that immediately dissolves in the human blood. Hence when alcohol is consumed, it doesn’t take much time to reach all parts of the human body. Due to this, the nervous system of the person is affected and he/she may lose responsiveness to external stimulus. This is when the person is said to be inebriated.

Constant alcoholism will interfere with the functioning of all the vital organs of the body. The major organs affected are the liver, brain, heart and kidneys.

Liver is perhaps the most seriously affected in the long run. With prolonged alcoholism, the liver may develop cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver tissue. Once cirrhosis sets in, it is very difficult to return the health back to normal.

In the stomach, alcohol can cause several gastric problems which may interfere with digestion. At the same time, each time a person has alcohol, it numbs his/her nervous system. In due course, the person may lose some or all of the fundamental senses.

What are the Symptoms of Alcoholism?

Generally people who are alcoholics can be easily identified even in a crowd. The habit shows some characteristic symptoms. These are as follows:-

  • A person with the habit of alcoholism will have all the trademark drunkard’s characteristics – red eyes, unkempt hair, mouth reeking of alcohol, unsteady gait, etc. But there are several people who mask these signs well.

  • Alcoholics usually set specific times for their drinking sessions. These could be before dinner. If alcohol is not available one particular day, they may become very cantankerous.

  • Even during the time they are not drinking, alcoholics would not be able to focus on the work at hand. This would sour their business and family life.

  • Over time, alcoholics build a resistance to alcohol. For this reason, they will keep increasing their intake so as to feel the effects of the alcohol.

    How can Alcoholism be avoided?

For an alcoholic, avoiding alcohol could be a very difficult task. The withdrawal symptoms of alcoholism may be very severe. So it is not advisable for a hardcore alcohol to stop drinking entirely. Instead, the alcohol should be carefully phased out.

The following steps can be taken to reduce alcohol intake:-

  • The person must be made to take interest in constructive hobbies and sports.

  • Love and affection from family members and friends could strengthen the resolve of the person to give up alcoholism.

  • Attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous will show the alcoholic how people have managed to kick their boozing habits. This will create a very positive outlook in the alcoholic.

  • Instead of alcohol, other drinks with less alcohol in them can be used, such as wine and cocktails. Eventually even these can be stopped.

How can Alcoholism be controlled with Simple Home Remedies?

There are many home remedies to reduce the effects of alcoholism. The following are some of them:

  • Fruit juices are very effective in lowering the effects of alcoholism. For removing the effects of a hangover, the juice of a lemon or orange will be very effective. Eating an apple or banana helps to flush out the toxins from the body which collect due to alcoholism.

  • Both grapes and dates are very beneficial in reducing the urge to consume alcohol. If alcoholics are kept on a diet of only grapes for a couple of weeks, then most likely the temptation to drink will be totally gone.

  • Introduce many other drinks in the person’s diets so that the craving for the alcoholic drink is reduced.

  • When the person feels the urge to consume alcohol, having a glass of carrot juice will help to reduce the temptation.

Before we look at the herbs to give you a hard erection, let’s look at the common causes of erectile dysfunction.

Fatigue stress and low energy levels can sap your libido and effect your erection and so to can a lack of testosterone and the one we are going to look at now is the most common and crucial one – Poor Blood Circulation.

Think about what happens when you become aroused – your heart beats faster and starts to pump an increased flow of blood to the penis. When it get to the penis it must be allowed to enter and here the role of the chemical nitric oxide is crucial.

    Your Erection and Nitric Oxide

The chemical is secreted in the walls of the blood vessels which allow the vessels to relax and expand enough, to let in the increased flow of blood needed to create an erection. Without enough nitric oxide you will never get an erection so you need to get enough.

Now let’s look at some herbs which will help you get a hard erection naturally.

    Cnidium

Cnidium contains several compounds for sexual health including – coumarins, osthol, imperatorin, glucides and hepatoprotective sesquiterpenes. These compounds help to increase nitric oxide release and inhibit PDE-5. Cnidium also helps promote better blood circulation to the penis.

    Cistanche Bark

This herb is an important medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a tonic herb which in terms of sexual wellness helps to increase blood circulation to all areas of the body and is also taken to combat fatigue and increase energy levels.

    Tongkat Ali

The bioactive Glygopeptide compounds in Tongkat Ali were shown to increase free testosterone and decrease SHBG levels – to assist in getting a stronger harder erection as well as increase libido. Medical studies have also shown that Tongakat Ali has a positive impact on sperm by increasing sperm count, sperm size and motility.

    Mucuna Pruriens

Contains l-Dopa which converts to dopamine which stimulates production of testosterone in the pituitary gland. Dopamine plays another key role in getting an erection, by inhibiting prolactin – high levels of which are considered responsible for around 70-80% of erection failures.

Use the Above Combination for a Rock Hard Erection

The above combination covers all the common reasons that cause erection problems and can be found with other powerful herds in the best natural sex pills. Not only can you get a hard erection with them, they will also increase your overall wellbeing.
