How do guinea pigs get vitamin C in the wild?

Posted by admin on Oct 20, 2009

I know that guinea pigs need vitamin C daily from their diet because they can’t produce it or store it on their own, but I have read that their natural diet in the wild is just grasses. Where do wild guinea pigs get their vitamin C?

Most animals produce vitamin C in their cells from its component parts. This means that they do not need vitamin C in their diet, because they will produce it from the food they eat.

Guinea pigs, primates and humans do NOT produce vitamin C in their bodies, so they MUST get it from their diet. If they do not consume adequate amounts of vitamin C they will suffer from a deficiency called scurvy.
Signs of scurvy include lethargy, diarrhoea, weight loss, and internal skeletal-muscular haemorrhage.

Vitamin C is also a water-soluble vitamin, so it can not be stored in the body. These animals therefore need to get vit C in their diet every day.

Wild guinea pigs eat a variety of plant matter – and plants contain high levels of vitamin C.

If you want more detail consider this:

In the wild guinea pigs are grazers – they eat all the time. Their diet is low in calories, so they must eat a large quantity to get enough energy. It is easy to get enough vit C when you eat such a large amount of fresh food! Many pet guinea pigs are fed a complete diet, with very little fresh food. As a result you need to get all the requierd vit C in a much smaller quantity of food.

How does vitamin C help the immune system?

Posted by admin on Oct 14, 2009

I know vitamin C helps the immune system, but I am curious, specifically, how it works. Any links to articles or web pages about this would be great. Thanks.

http://www.stopgettingsick.com/template.cfm-1689

Vitamin C is an important part of your body’s basic building functions and its disease prevention and protection system. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help block damage from free radicals. Vitamin C also increases the absorption of iron. Vitamin C is critical to collagen production, a protein that binds cells together and is the building block of connective tissues throughout the body. It’s necessary for growing and repairing tissues all over the body. Vitamin C boosts your immune system and increases white blood cell production as well. It even aids in healing wounds and the repairing and maintaining healthy cartilage, bones and teeth. When your body is healing from infection, injury, disease or surgery, the body needs large amounts of vitamin C.

Studies are ongoing on how Vitamin C can better help our bodies heal. Recent research indicates that vitamin C and vitamin E work synergistically having a greater effect together than separately. Studies also show that Vitamin C is a powerful protection against many illnesses and medical conditions, including heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, common cold, osteoarthritis, obesity and weight loss, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and other kinds of dementia. Research shows that while vitamin C will not cure these conditions, it may help prevent them from occurring, or slow progression

Is getting vitamin C injections good for health and mainly skin? Does it really make the skin flawless?

Posted by admin on Oct 12, 2009

I’m thinking of getting vitamin C injections to make my skin (mainly face) look less fatigue and more energetic and lively.

That’s a new one to me! Have you thought of actually ingesting the vitamin and/or taking a good multi-vitamin, eating right (lots of salads, fruits, and veggies) and of course, getting a good night’s sleep (8 hours). Also, don’t smoke and drink to excess, wear moisturizer and sun block.

What’s the difference between ‘fresh’ & ‘longlife’ juice, in terms on the amount of Vitamin C?

Posted by admin on Oct 10, 2009

Hey, i did a titration to discover how much Vitamin C was in an ornage juice and an apple juice.

It was found that the apple juice had more Vitamin C than the orange juice, which was correct.

However normally orange juice has more…

My teacher told me to discuss the juice comparison of a longlife juice (apple), and a fresh juice (orange), and how the affect the amount of Vitamin C in the juice itself.

Can you please explain what the difference is, and how the Vitamin C content is impacted? I can’t find anything…

apples have more. you press apples and squeeze oranges.
its so obvious!

Where can I buy vitamin C lotion for the skin? or what can I use to get rid of acne?

Posted by admin on Oct 8, 2009

I have heard that vitamin C tables/lotion applied to the face help with the complexion as well as acne. Can someone tell me where I would buy some of this and for around how much? Also do it really work? Thank you in advance.

how about trying these instead…it might help you..
Step1
Resist the urge to attack when these plugged sebaceous glands pop up. In other words, don’t pop your pimples, this can cause infections and even scarring.
Step2
Keep in mind that a combination of hormonal activity, a buildup of bacteria and the shedding of dead skin cells causes pimples. Do what you can to prevent a breakout by establishing a skin-care routine appropriate for your skin type.
Step3
Have patience. It could take up to one month for a blemish to disappear completely. The less you poke at it, the better.
Step4
Buy an antibacterial, oil-free concealer that can blend the redness of the pimple into your own skin color. Green shades tend to offset redness the best. (This might not be an option for those who don’t wear makeup.)
Step5
Try a facial mud mask. This may shrink a pimple.
Step6
Realize that despite the happy teens in the commercials, "zit zapping" solutions, medications you apply directly to pimples, don’t do much more than dry out the top layer of skin covering the pimples. These medications don’t provide a long-term cure.
Step7
If you are going to break the rules by "extracting the blemish," aesthetician-speak for popping your pimple, wash your hands, then lightly squeeze the top of the pimple with a tissue or cotton swab. Clean the area thoroughly when you’re done. If nothing happens, leave the pimple alone until it’s ready to pop.
Step8
Apply a benzol peroxide acne medication to the pimple and avoid applying medication to the surrounding area.
Ingredients: Garlic
Instructions: Crush a clove of garlic and rub juice on effected area. Fresh garlic will kill the bacteria and your pimples will disappear with regular applications. Also try eating a clove or two of raw garlic.

Ingredients: Calamine Lotion
Instructions: Cleanse your face with astringent before bed, apply a thick layer of Calamine lotion to pimple area and rinse off in the morning.

Ingredients: Egg whites
Instructions: Place egg whites all over your face like a mask. Let it dry, and rinse with warm water. Repeat daily until pimples are gone. This remedy will keep your face pimple free.

Ingredients: Toothpaste
Instructions: Apply toothpaste to affected areas (not gel), before bed. Wash off in the morning. This home remedy for pimples really works, with quick results!

Ingredients: Olive Oil, Salt
Instructions: Mix three tablespoons of salt with four tablespoons of olive oil in a bowl or container. put the mixture in a washcloth or on your fingers and scrub in face. works great as an exfoliant! and the olive oil helps keep skin soft making it an excellent home remedy for pimples/acne.

Ingredients: Honey, Cinnamon
Instructions: Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon into 3 tablespoons of honey. Use as a facial scrub, works great as an exfoliant, and you can leave on overnight or wash it off after half an hour, either works fine.Do not use bar soap on your face! What are the errors that affect the vitamin C content I got from titration?

Posted by admin on Oct 2, 2009

full question: Compare your calculated amount of vitamin C to that on the label of the drink. What may be the reasons for such discrepancy ? (Hint: Read the label carefully. Does the vitamin C content in label refer to vitamin C added or vitamin C present ? The can make a difference !)
*** I got a result that the vitamin C content is a bit higher than that on the drink label.

try to look around on this site http://www.google.com/ it’s help
