I heard the yolk of the egg has most of the vitamins & has something in it good for the heart is this true?

Posted by admin on Sep 28, 2009

The egg yolk is the best part of the egg. If it comes from hens allowed to graze on grass it will have vitamins A,D omega 3 fatty acids as well as EPA and DHA, long chain fatty acids important in the development of the nervous system. They are also the most concentrated source of choline, a vital B vitamin important in brain health.
The yolk is much easier to digest than the white, and to protect heat sensitive components should be eaten runny. The white on the other hand should be cooked, as this makes the protein more digestible.
Don’t worry about ignorant people rattling on about cholesterol. Eggs do contain cholesterol, but only approximately a quarter of cholesterol is gained from diet, the liver produces the rest. If you eat less then the liver will produce more. This is why cholesterol lowing drugs are so popular, reducing cholesterol in the diet has no effect what so ever.
Eggs from truly free range eggs are indeed a nutrient rich food that should play a part of any diet.

WWYD: Jasmines grade II heart murmur is gone…vet said wan off supplement…I dont think I want to?

Posted by admin on Sep 28, 2009

I don’t know if anyone remembers me, but I took in a pregnant stray in april and when I took her to the vet she had a grade II heart murmur. I took her in today (6 months later) for a re-check and the murmur is completely gone. He said that she could have been anemic that caused it but he was quite confused on it being GONE.

I have been supplementing her with 100mg (she is 45lbs) of Coenzyme Q10 and fish oil. He told me 6 months ago there were no supplements to try but I found some….He told me to wean her off and see what happens but I am unsure of if I want to do that.

SO what would you do?

Thanks

It can’t hurt to keep her on the supplement. Great job on getting her healthy!

Natural remedies to unclog my arteries and heart?

Posted by admin on Sep 28, 2009

Do not say diet or only post a link. I will report it if you do.

Foods with high fiber content have been shown to help over time, but there is no quick fix or guarantee. Reducing arterial plaque is a lifestyle issue, not a "remedy" issue.

Natural Vs. Synthetic: Not All Vitamins Are The Same

Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009

There are literally thousands of vitamins and supplements available for purchase today. Each type of supplement such as calcium, ginkgo biloba or multivitamins has many brands available made in a variety of different ways.

Some vitamins are derived directly from natural sources such as oranges, oils, plants and vegetables. And for each vitamin available naturally, there is a vitamin pill available too. Although the vitamin supplements claim to be the same, you may not be getting the amount of nutrients that you imagine you are getting. It’s not to say that synthetic vitamins are inferior to their natural supplements, but it’s important you the differences.

Another important consideration is the fillers used in vitamin supplement pills. Some brands contain extra substances that you really don’t need any may actually cause you more harm than good.

Natural vitamin sources

Natural vitamins sources are those that your body gets from fruits, plants, vegetables, animals and other natural sources. This is typically a very easy way for your body to process and absorb the vitamins you are looking for. However, if you do not eat a well balanced diet, your body may be deprived of certain vitamins.

Natural vitamin sources may not be adequate in other instances too. For example, you may have an intestinal problem that prevents you from properly absorbing nutrients. If this is the case you may consider supplementing with a vitamin pill to ensure you get your daily allowance of vitamins.

Synthetic vitamin sources
Although some supplemental are derived from natural sources, not all are. Many vitamins, like vitamin C, can be produced synthetically in a laboratory and have exactly the same structure. However, there are vitamins that are not the same, like vitamin E. Vitamin E has two different forms, one that is absorbed and used by the human body and one that is not.

In the laboratory, chemists typically produce a vitamin E that is half good vitamin D and half not. What this means to you is that often times the vitamin pills you buy at the drugstore only give your body half the amount of vitamin E as indicated on the label.

Vitamin fillers
Vitamin tablets typically contain a variety of fillers and while some of them are just fine for you, you do need to be on the look out for others, or the risk of overdoing them. Soybean oil is a very common filler and very unhealthy filler found most often in gelcaps.

Soybean oil can actually do more harm than the good of the vitamin because it is very high in trans fats (these are the bad fats) and can cause all sorts of heart problems as well as obesity. Another unnecessary filler to be on the lookout for is artificial color. Artificial colors have proven to be carcinogenic and many people are allergic to them too.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids:”The Most Important Dietary Supplement You Can Take”

Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009

Those are the words of Leigh Connealy, MD, who I interviewed for my new book, The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy: Drug-Free Remedies To Help You Safely Lose Weight, Shed Fat, Firm Up, And Feel Great.

Dr. Connealy is the medical director of the South Coast Medical Center for New Medicine, in Tustin, California. (www.scmedicalcenter.com)

There, she and her staff have counseled thousands of people how to be healthier through natural means-including using vitamins and herbs as aids to weight-loss, the subject of my book.

But along with telling me about supplements that can aid weight-loss, Dr. Connealy was very keen to tell me about the supplement she feels is the most important for better health: omega-3 fatty acids.

“I put every patient I see on a supplement of omega-3 fatty acids,” she says. “It is the most important supplement a person can take.” Why?

Omega-3s, she explains, strength the membrane, or outer covering, of the cell. This aids in cell-to-cell communication, a crucial process in health.

Omega-3 also decreases inflammation, which is linked to many different diseases, including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s. In fact, omega-3 plays a role in every physiological function in the body, says Dr. Connealy.

There are two kinds of Omega-3 supplements: fish oil supplements, rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosahexaenoic acid); and plant-derived supplements, rich in ALA (alpha-linoleic acid), a fatty acid that converts to DHA and EPA in the body. Talk to your doctor or other qualified health professional to determine which would be best for you.

I wrote The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy with Harry Preuss, MD, a professor at Georgetown University Medical Center, a top researcher with more than 300 scientific studies to his credit, a nutritionist, and an expert in natural remedies for health. In writing about omega-3, we reviewed literally hundreds of studies showing that the nutrient can strengthen the heart, boost emotional well-being, improve memory and learning, and decrease joint pain. Here are three impressive examples:

Heart attack. In a study conducted by Italian researchers, more than 11,000 people who had suffered a heart attack took an omega-3 supplement or underwent another type of medical, dietary or nutritional therapy. Among those who took omega-3, there were 30 percent fewer deaths and 20 percent fewer heart attacks.

Arthritis pain. Neurosurgeons at the University of Pittsburgh gave fish oil supplements to 120 arthritis patients with neck or back pain. After seventy-five days, 68 percent of the patients had stopped taking prescription pain medications.

Manic depression. People with manic depression (bipolar disorder) were given either EPA supplements or a placebo for several weeks. Those who took EPA had significantly less depression and mania. EPA is “an effective and well-tolerated intervention in bipolar depression” wrote the researchers, in the British Journal of Psychology.

In writing The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy, Dr. Preuss decided on a science-based approach to recommending brands of supplements: if a brand had been shown to work in a scientific study, it was the brand to recommend. For omega-3, Dr. Preuss recommends the brand Nordic Naturals, which has been researched at Duke University, the University of California-Davis, Texas A&M University, Oregon Health Science University, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in New York, and many other universities, hospitals and research institutions.

Acupressure for Diagnosis and Cure

Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009

Body massage has been used for centuries for getting relief from aches and pains. Simple rubbing of body parts to soothe inflamed muscles has turned into specialized skill, has tremendously increased its scope and has become a major industry. Massage is used not only to ease pain but also to get relaxation, heal injuries, cure stiffness of joints, cure digestion problems, relieve stress and for many other applications. The ancient art of massage is now aided with modern electrical gadgets, soft music, controlled lighting.

Acupressure is a specialized branch of massage. It works on certain principles. The first principle which governs acupressure is the belief that the entire body is one combined unit. The treatment is applied to the whole body because any disease will affect the entire body, not just the local area where manifestation of disease appears. In common massage often the affected part is locally treated.

The second principle governing acupressure is that main points of blood circulating nerves, the network of nervous system and glandular system are situated on the palms and the feet. Each body organ has related points on palms and feet and by treatment of those points the particular organ gets treated.

In our modern lifestyle lack of sufficient muscular activities gives rise to various physical problems. Unbalanced food and abuse of natural routine of the body (such as keeping awake when you should be sleeping) add to the problems. The muscles become weak. Bones start shifting from their places with the adoption of faulty posture. There is undesirable accumulation and deposit of chemicals in the blood vessels, joints and various parts of the body. As affliction to body organs increases, the related points on palm and feet are also affected.

The points on the palms and feet reflect the condition of their related organs. This makes acupressure a good diagnostic tool. By feeling the palms and feet with gentle pressure it is possible to get a fair idea about the diseased parts. If pain is observed on any point, the body part related to that point needs immediate attention.

Application of pressure on palms and feet has the effect of charging various body parts. When specific points are pressed the nerves leading to the related parts are actuated which in turn stimulates those parts. As a result flow of blood and other body fluids improve providing nourishment to those parts and cleaning away the waste material more efficiently. Any undesirable deposits start dissolving. Functions of the glands improve. There is overall rejuvenation in the body.

Acupressure has beneficial effects in curing many diseases. These diseases may include metabolic disorders, body deformity, inflammation of body tissues, digestion related problems, heart related problems and problems with nervous system, to name a few.

Regular practice of acupressure is a good preventive option to ward off diseases. Anyone can learn simple workout routine with acupressure. However in case of serious medical problems it is always advisable to seek expert advice from a trained practitioner of acupressure.

Can you receive the benefits of spicy foods (such as increasing metabolism) without "tasting" them?

Posted by admin on Sep 26, 2009

I really don’t like spicy foods but have heard how healthy crushed red pepper (cayenne pepper) is for the heart and has the added benefit of increasing the metabolism. So, I came up with the idea of swallowing a small amount of crushed red pepper with water as if I was taking a vitamin. But I wonder if it still effects metabolism in this way since I’m in effect cheating or bypassing the capsaicin of the peppers.

Well, you just have to eat it.
You still get the benefits, as long as you eat it, which you are.

If you want to start having it in food, then block your nose while you eat. Most taste comes from what you smell :)

Are there any herbal garlic drinks or ways to eat a lot of garlic every day??

Posted by admin on Sep 26, 2009

My doctor told me to incorporate a lot of garlic into my diet to reduce cholesterol/ heart problems and as a natural antibiotic.

Are there any recipes that you know of like a garlic herbal drink or recipes with heavy garlic???

I believe you can by a garlic supplement pill at most health food stores or in the health department of your drug store.

Other than that, most of the time I use olive oil to cook I add in some crushed garlic.

While I’ve never had elevated cholesterol levels I eat a bowl of Cheerios every morning or oatmeal as oat is a great way to keep your levels down. I also take the One a Day vitamin which is made for keeping levels down.

How lost does vitamin C last in your system?

Posted by admin on Sep 26, 2009

I’m experiencing the beginnings of a severe cold and I bought some vitamin C tablets to take. Does anyone know how long vitamin C lasts in your system, because I heard it wasn’t very long.

Vitamin C is eliminated from your body every day as it is water soluble. The best strategy is to take vitamin C two or three times a day as that is far more effective than taking the total amount once a day. If you only take it once a day there is nothing left for later on towards the end of the day.

what vitamins & minerals do you neeed to prevent coronary heart disease?

Posted by admin on Sep 26, 2009

please help!!

There is no specific nutrient or combination(s) that will prevent heart disease. That said, there are several nutrients that the heart needs to maintain proper health and function. These include but are not limited to: calcium, iron and protein. Basically, since the heart is a muscle, any nutrient required for proper muscle support is needed by the heart as well.
The diets of people living in the US and other developed countries normally provide adequate amounts of the essential nutrients to maintain health. It’s other things we find in our diets that cause harm, particularly in the US. Things like saturated fat, trans fatty acids, cholesterol and sodium. The body does need certain amounts of some fats, cholesterol and sodium. It does not need any trans fat. We Americans consume way too much of these.
Eating a diet high in fiber is recommended by most experts. A varied diet focusing on fruits, vegetables and whole grains is also promoted by most. Meats should include leaner cuts with all visible fat removed. Fish and poultry are recommended. Especially fish high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids are another recommendation. Omega-6 can be found in liquid vegetable oils, including soybean oil, corn oil, and safflower oil. It is also found in soybeans, canola, walnuts, and flaxseed.
Some people may benefit from dietary supplements. This is something that should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Physical Activity/Daily Exercise are also very important factors in fighting cardiovascular disease. This could be a simple as walking around the block or may include a gym membership with an intense cardio workout.
